Iwahig is one of the oldest and largest open-air prisons in the world. Unlike typical prisons, it functions more like a community or farm, where qualified inmates (called residents) are allowed to move more freely within designated areas.

Located about 30–40 minutes from Puerto Princesa City, it sits on a large reservation with mountains, forests, and farmland.

Established during the American colonial period in the early 1900s.
Designed as a penal colony where inmates could farm, raise livestock, and rehabilitate through work.
